Dear parents and caregivers, educators and profess

Dear parents and caregivers, educators and professionals who work with kids:

In a world where only a small percentage of children disclose that they've experienced child sexual abuse, what are the things that help a child disclose?

Rosalyn McElvaney, a clinical psychologist, published her findings on this question in 2020.

Things that help kids disclose include:

-Being asked if anyone is harming them, making them feel unsafe, etc.
-Expecting they'll be believed when they tell.
-Wanting the abuse to be stopped.
-Struggling with the emotional weight of the abuse.
-Realizing the (sexual) behavior is not appropriate.
-Having a safe adult they can tell.

I disclosed at 15, after years of sexual abuse.
What took me so long?
The first and last things on McElvaney's list were NOT in place.
Why did I eventually tell?
Because of all the reasons in between.

This list shows the importance of conversations with kids on the topic of body safety.
-Those conversations can come from caring adults or schools.
-Churches and youth-serving organizations too.
-A parent reading a book on body safety to their children then having a conversation.

This feels like a risk to me.
Posting about this big--to me, at least--concept.

I'd heard about this idea before.
More than once, actually.
Where a victim of sexual abuse or assault experiences arousal.
Not because they liked the sexual violence that happened to them,
But because their body did what it was made to do.
It reacted in a certain way.

I heard the official term for this phenomenon--"Arousal Non-Concordance"--on @NicoleBromley's podcast when she interviewed @sheilagregoire, author of the book, "She Deserves Better: Raising Girls to Resist Toxic Teachings on Sex, Self & Speaking Up."

I think it's an important concept for survivors and the people who love them to know about.
