Probably because it's recently come to light that COCSA--child-on-child-sexual-abuse--is currently the most common type of child sexual abuse.

Child safety experts now believe 40-70% of all child sexual abuse incidents are initiated by another minor.
Which means these days minors are responsible for more child sexual abuse than adults.
That's disturbing, don't you think?

Dear Parent:

If you sense significant tension in your family...
Maybe one of your children seems scared of one of their siblings.
Or they act as if they don't like them.
Perhaps one kid "sucks up" to another on a regular basis.

Any or all of these behaviors may be indications--red flags--that sibling abuse is happening in your family.
Which can be emotional, physical, or sexual.

Have a heart-to-heart conversation with the child who is "acting out."
Based on their response, it may be time to book an appointment with a family therapist.

After I wrote my book, "The Brave Knight," to show kids what "grooming" is, I became obsessed with the topic.

Grooming, if you don't already know, is the process by which a sexual predator will gain the trust of a potential victim and sometimes their community.

I hope this little tidbit of info helps you be on the lookout for "suspicious activity."
Either directed at you or the kids you care about.

Know what's scary? In the US, family members make up 30% of all sexual predators.

But in my state it's 38%.

And a woman I met at the Envision Conference this summer said in her state, the number is 60%.
60% of all sexual abusers in her state are fathers, mothers, or their significant others. Grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles. Cousins.

Be very careful who you leave your kids with.
Very.

I am so honored that @resolvebyaliceperle, author

I am so honored that @resolvebyaliceperle, author of the memoir, "Resolve: A Story of Courage, Healthy Inquiry and Recovery from Sibling Sexual Abuse," recently wrote a review--an excellent one--for my book, "Everyone Was Silent."

Here's another one of my favorite child safety tips.

At body safety assemblies, I tell kids to do this.
In tip sheets to parents and caregivers, I include this advice.
This safety strategy is also featured in the resource section at the back of my children's book, "The Brave Knight."

An "exit strategy"--aka a personal safety plan--is easy to create.
You just need one sentence:
If ____ happens, then I will ____.

Need an example?
If my clothing catches on fire, then I will stop, drop, and roll.

Ask your child what scares them, and using their words, create the exit plan sentence.
-If someone sends me an inappropriate photo, then I will find a safe adult.
-If a stranger asks me to go with them to find their lost puppy, then I will run home.
-If I lose my parent at the grocery store, then I will go to the customer service desk.
-If people I'm with want me to drink or do drugs, then I'll go to the bathroom and text a safe adult to come get me.

When you and your child create exit strategies for all the scenarios that scare them, it's a glimpse into their world.
You'll not only learn WHAT scares them, you may learn WHO scares them.
Either way, it's valuable information!
And the experience may very well increase your closeness with them.
