Did you know that sexual predators Rarely stop af Did you know that sexual predators
Rarely stop after they've abused one child?

As this statistic says,
Predators can go on to have as many as 50-150 victims.😮

Perhaps it's like gambling or doing drugs.
The more you do it,
The more you want to do it.

I often share this statistic at body safety assemblies.
To encourage kids to disclose that they've been sexually abused.
"If you won't do it for yourself," I tell them.
"Please do it for other kids!"

-Your siblings
-Your cousins
-The kids on your soccer team
-Your youth group friends
-The other kids at the bus stop

To prevent child sexual abuse,
Have conversations with the kids you love
On a regular basis.
Ask them if they need your help with anything.
Also ask if anything--or anyone--is making them anxious or scared.
I'd ask those questions at least once a month.
So they know you care.

Dear Survivor: Whatever you survived... For me it Dear Survivor:

Whatever you survived...
For me it was child sexual abuse (CSA),
I hope you will get the help you need
To heal
And hopefully to even thrive.

Because you are worth it!
You deserve to live a wonderful life.
Despite what happened.

While KARMA chases the person who hurt you.
The universe is cheering you on!

Last year I had the privilege of participating in Last year I had the privilege of participating in the creation of a mini-documentary with Amanda Mustard—the photo journalist who created the film, “Great Photo, Lovely Life”—and Luke Malone, on the topic of child sexual abuse prevention.

Today the terrific finished product is live on the homepage of the New York Times opinion page.

I’ve posted a gift link in the LinkTree in my bio so you can watch the 7-minute film.👀

Thank you, Amanda and Luke, for the opportunity to be part of this project.
It was an honor to participate.

And thank you also for the work you’re doing to address the public health crisis that is child sexual abuse (CSA).

Are you a survivor of child sexual abuse (CSA)? I Are you a survivor of child sexual abuse (CSA)?

If so, I am so sorry.
CSA does a number on the heart, mind, and body of a survivor.
Usually for years.

One thing that has helped me from the time it happened to me
Was always believing my abuser was the bad person, not me.
A child who experiences sexual abuse is NEVER to blame.
No matter what happened in the scenario.

The person who sexually abuses a child
Is always at fault.
Whether it was a really bad decision
In a moment of unfortunate impulse control
Or an act of 100% planned abuse.

You are not bad, sweet friend.
You were a child.
And children cannot legally consent to sexual behavior.

You didn't do a bad thing.
You are not a bad thing.
The shame, guilt, and responsibility
Is all on your abuser.

How do you get better at writing? You hang out wit How do you get better at writing?
You hang out with really good writers.

At writing conferences.
In a cabin on a river.
At the beach.
Or in an Air BnB in a cute town.

Make sure you soak up all the things they say
About the craft of writing:
-How they plot a novel
-Develop a character
-How they win national level short story competitions
-And pitch a literary agent

Be sure to email each other full chapters
Or just the first and last sentences of manuscripts
And pitch emails
To help get the wording just right.

The pecking away at a keyboard
Or drafting stories page by page with a fountain pen
Can be lonely work
But the writing life doesn't have to be.

(Here I am last fall with @annadicksonjames and @karinfuller. We spent a whole weekend in Hinton, Best Virginia eating, drinking, hiking, exploring cool shops, and Karin's super cool warehouse. Anna's current work-in-project--The Sky King: A Literary Choose Your Own Adventure-- just got shortlisted in the @santafewritersproject awards. Woohoo!)
